In Part I we looked at how the history of Shakespeare came in to being and how it unfolded and grew; its origins and sources, and the people involved – most notably John Evensen and Mrs. Emma Marble Muir.
In Part II, which we have titled ” Separating Fact From Fiction”, we again utilise the writings of Rita and Janaloo Hill with an especial emphasis on Rita Hill’s 1963 publication “Then And Now Here And Around Shakespeare“. We will begin to look at the [still] given provenances for some of those buildings which remain standing at Shakespeare, and one which unfortunately no longer stands – the General Merchandise Building – together with some of the most notorious events associated with them such as the killing of Ross Woods, murdered in a quarrel over the last egg in town, and the hanging of Russian Bill and Sandy King. We will also take a brief look at Shakespeare’s reputation as a town devoid of any kind of sanctioned law enforcement.
